When dark spots or discolouration appear on walls or ceilings, it is often assumed a mould, but this is not always the cause.

A mother’s worst fears became true when she searched the Internet for help in identifying the strange spots on her ceiling. When dark spots or discolouration appear on walls or ceilings, it is often assumed that it is mould – but this is not always the cause.

Mould is a common phenomenon in the colder months of the UK, as it is often difficult to ventilate the houses well and keep them warm, especially during the current cost of living crisis, in which families may limit the frequency with which they set the thermostat higher. But for a tenant who posted anonymously on Reddit, it is almost certain that the mould didn’t cause problems for her.

What are these spots that keep reappearing on my apartment ceiling? The ceiling doesn’t feel soft or wet. byu/RainbowUnicorn0228 infixit

She shared a picture of strange brown spots on her blanket and explained: “I’m a tenant, so I can’t tear out the blanket or anything. The person above me says that her floor is not wet and she has not noticed any penetrating water. The maintenance simply sprays ceiling paint over it every time. The stains were originally rather in the corner, but have shifted. Always two spots of about the same size”.

“I saw a similar post about rodents as a cause. Is there a non-invasive method to test this? I want my apartment complex to find and fix the problem and not just “repair” the stains with colour! Help!”, she added.

Hundreds rushed into the comments section to give advice and many said that the problem was caused by mouse urine – a rather unpleasant prospect.

“I’ve had this before. Thought it was always popping up spots. I then found out that it was mice that pissed in my attic,” wrote one person.

Another person agreed and commented: “Brown spots that appear in different places are rodent pipi”, while a third person added: “It is rat pipi that has leaked”. The woman says that her son “sniffed” the place and confirms that she smelled similar to his “hamster cage” – poor child!

But hopefully, the solution to the rodent problem should be relatively simple, unlike this situation, whose house was in such poor condition that she fell through the ceiling.
