Spiders have a way of sending shivers down our spines, their eight legs and beady eyes conjuring up a sense of unease that’s hard to shake. There’s something about these eight-legged creatures that make our skin crawl. And when they catch something unexpected, like an unsuspecting mouse, it can be downright chilling. A recent Reddit post has captured just that, showcasing a massive black widow spider with a grisly catch that’s left users unsettled and fascinated. In the post, the user explained that the image was shared by their father, who was looking for advice on how to deal with the situation. “My dad just sent me this picture- he’s seeking advice on how to get rid of it. Just sharing. There’s so much going on here,” the user wrote on Reddit.

The post quickly gained traction, amassing over 35,000 upvotes on Reddit. Despite the buzz, many questioned the photo’s authenticity. In response, the Reddit user clarified, “The picture is 100% real (my dad isn’t exactly the type to use AI, he doesn’t even use self-checkout options at restaurants.) In all reality, he is the type to ignore a giant spider until he notices a mouse in its clenches.”

The user also shared that the rodent in the photo is indeed a mouse, not a possum or rat, with its size matching the edge of the brick nearby.

Many commenters thought there was a bat next to the mouse, but the user clarified that it was actually a wasp nest made of mud. “His house is covered with them this time of year as they are common in Eastern New Mexico… the house is also in an area that sees rattlesnakes, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and you never know what you are going to come across out there,” the user noted.

The user concluded in the post that their father is more likely to eliminate the black widow rather than relocate it. “The bite may not be fatal, but it’s certainly an inconvenience at the very least.”

Amidst the clarification, many users found the picture horrifying. A user said, “One of the most insane nature pics I’ve seen. That is definitely an Opposum, I wonder how it ended up there..”

Another added, “3 egg sacs, pregnant again and two whole ass rodents on display as trophy kills. This is God’s strongest spooder.”

A person suggested, “I would tell your dad to hand over the keys and tell her she’s welcome to stay as long as she’d like. The dead rat makes a clear statement. She’s willing to earn her keep and eliminate rivals. The only question is which side of that bargain he wants to end up on.”

“I mean. She did him a huge favour. Why ruin a good thing?” a person joked.

“Honestly It’s more the spider’s house than yours at this point. Feed her more rats to appease her, become her supplicant, etc etc,” another user playfully suggested.

An individual shared, “I would not have believed it, but apparently it actually happens. Black widows have in fact been known to kill and eat rodents – which are much, much larger than themselves.”
