Viral Video Shows How Pink Tandoori Chicken Is Made, Internet Calls It 'Barbie-Q Chicken'
The pink colour in the chicken was added by using beetroot.

One rarely used the words pink and tandoori chicken in the same sentence unless they, like us, stumbled upon this dish. Recently, a food account on Instagram shared a video that showed the tandoori chicken getting slathered in pink sauce before being paired with the traditional mint chutney. This unique dish was served at a Mumbai restaurant. Even though the video of this pink-coloured chicken got over 37,000 likes, in the comments many poked fun at it for being gimmicky.

One of the most liked comments on the video read, “Barbie-q chicken”, referring to the all-pink craze of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film Barbie. Many others joked about how the chicken could have gotten the pink colour. One person joked, “Gelusil syrup”, referring to a famous pink-coloured antacid syrup. Another person wrote, “Solkadhi wala chicken.” Solkadi is a drink made of coconut milk and kokum.

It is not mentioned how the chicken got pink, but when a person mentioned that beetroot mixed with curd was used to give the dish its unique colour, the food account replied with multiple hearts, indicating that this was the right guess.

Some people expressed shock and disappointment towards the dish, an Instagram user wrote, “Baapre.. my immediate reaction.” Another person claimed, “This made me physically sick.” Someone questioned, “The question isn’t about which colour is added. The question is why?”

This is not the only time when cooks have incorporated pink colour into unusual dishes. Earlier this year, Mumbai-based baker Heena Kausar Raad made pink-coloured biryani and pink raita to go with it. She made these dishes for a Barbie-themed party. She captioned her video, “Pink biryani it’s Barbie biryani.” In the video, the baker added that she has also made other side dishes in pink that will go well with biryani.

In her comments section, many expressed disappointment at how the traditional dishes were changed. People also wondered if the pink food dye she used was bad for her health. An Instagram user jokingly commented, “Hey so I’m gonna contact my lawyer and we will see you in court for this. I will get that biryani justice (i’m coming for everything).” Another person simply asked, “But why?” Despite the disapproving comments, the above mentioned video got over 2.3 lakh likes.
