The Chandigarh police recently arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a first-class judicial magistrate after he was stopped for breaking traffic rules at a roundabout. According to reports, the man, Prakash Singh Marwah, is a lawyer and a resident of Chandigarh’s Sector 51 area.
On May 19, a video of the accused, Prakash Singh Marwah, purporting to be a judicial magistrate went viral on social media. The roughly six-minute clip captures the moment when traffic officers told the SUV driver to halt. However, the man drove the vehicle forward and came to a halt awkwardly. The video captures the moment traffic police signal the man to stop his Mahindra Scorpio.
The traffic police then questioned Prakash Singh Marwah after he got out of the car regarding a piece of cloth that was covering the registration number on the number plate. He became angry with the on-duty traffic cops and forced them to talk to a superior via his mobile phone. When asked for his driver’s licence, the man refused and arrogantly told the cop, “Nahi dikhaaunga (I won’t show).”
Shared on X (formally Twitter), the video has collected over 1.4 million views.

When the police continuously asked for his driver’s licence, Prakash Singh Marwah quickly fled the scene, shouting “challan bhej dena (send me the challan).” According to reports, the man has been charged with violating sections 170 (personating a public servant), 186 (obstructing public servants in the exercise of public duties), and 419 (cheating by personation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Prakash Singh Marwah was also issued a challan for running a red light and tampering with the number plate. “A complaint against the offender was given to the police station in Sector 49, following which an FIR was registered against him,” Senior Superintendent of Chandigarh Traffic Police Sumer Pratap Singh said as quoted by The Indian Express. Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), (Traffic) Harjit Kaur informed that the man’s vehicle would be seized.
Furthermore, on May 21, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana issued a show cause notice to the lawyer arrested for allegedly acting as a court officer and disputing with traffic cops.
The Bar Council has asked Prakash Singh Marwah why his advocate’s licence should not be revoked. Reports state that Marwah joined the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association in 2023 and has since practiced law at the Chandigarh District Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
