The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety swiftly responded to the incident but the suspects left the scene in multiple cars, leading officers on a pursuit.
Despite officers’ attempts to stop them, the robbers led the police on a chase from Sunnyvale to US Highway 101.
During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned one vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Eventually, five suspects were taken into custody, with the assistance of a Department of Public Safety dog but others escaped the scene.
While the total value of the stolen jewellery has not been disclosed by the authorities, the police said that a part of it has been recovered.
Public safety officials said they were trying to determine if the robbery was related to a jewellery store burglary in Sunnyvale that occurred in May involving multiple suspects.
No injuries were reported during the robbery or chase.
