The special investigation team (SIT) formed to investigate the Pathankot terror attacks by Pakistan has formally recommended lodging of FIR against Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Maulana Masood Azhar, four others and some unidentified persons.
The SIT has recommended FIR on the basis of information provided by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to his Pakistani counterpart Lt General (Retired) Naseer Khan.
Reacting to the development, sources in New Delhi claimed it to be a major victory for India in counter terrorism. The sources said that continuous pressure from India forced Pakistan to file FIR against the accused in the Pathankot case.
They further said that NSA Doval is in constant touch with his Pakistani counterpart, putting pressure on him for this. According to sources, India had communicated that no talks would take place unless cases were filed.
This comes over 10 days after Pakistan claimed that not much evidence was provided by India to establish the role of Masood Azhar.
The report was based on the findings of the team constituted by Pakistan to probe the attacks.
Pakistan NSA Lt-Gen (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua conveyed the report to his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval recently. As per reports, Janjua contacted Doval to update him on the SIT probe and to work out possible dates for talks between the foreign secretaries of the two countries.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in US in March.
According to the Pakistani media, a meeting is likely to be held on the sidelines of a nuclear summit hosted by US President Barack Obama in Washington.
Sharif and Modi have both accepted Obama's invitation to attend the summit on March 31 and April 1. This will be their first meeting following the Pathankot attacks and David Headley's revelations about the 26/11 Mumbai attack.
