Footage recorded via dashboard cam earlier in April of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) police officers chasing an attempted murder suspect who tried to flee on a bicycle has gone viral on social media.
The incident started shortly before midday on April 26 when cops responded to a call to investigate a shooting in the 100 block of East Avenue 36, just north of the 110 Freeway in Cypress Park, according to a statement by the Los Angeles Police Department.

“When the officers arrived, they determined that the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old John Lopez, had shot a family member following a verbal dispute and was no longer at the scene,” the police department said in its press release.
The victim who was shot was hospitalised with injuries that were not life-threatening, the statement, accessed by ABC7 Eyewitness News, said.
Shortly after a crime alert was issued, police reported that an aerial unit spotted Lopez riding a bicycle on the southbound M5 highway. The police patrol units conducted a traffic break on the freeway and followed Lopez as he was zigzagging through multiple lanes.
Lopez eventually exited the motorway via the Mission Road off-ramp and continued riding through traffic. After turning north on Daly Street, an officer in a police SUV performed a manoeuvre by striking the bicycle at a slow speed.
At one point in the video, cops could be heard saying: “You’re not going to go anywhere, man. Just stop. Pull over, man”.
This action, which is similar to a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) manoeuvre where police vehicles intentionally collide with a suspect’s vehicle to stop it, caused Lopez to lose control of his bike and fall to the ground.
Lopez was then detained without further incident, and a small-calibre firearm was found as he was being taken into custody, according to the LAPD. He complained of knee pain and was treated at a hospital before being booked for attempted murder. Authorities stated that the shooting victim was held overnight at a hospital for observation.
