Buckingham Palace broke its silence on Tuesday evening over Harry and Meghan's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The UK Palace issued a statement on Tuesday, saying the family was saddened to learn of the challenges Harry and Meghan had faced in the past few years and that they would address the issues privately.
In a statement on behalf of the Queen, the palace said that that allegations of racism made by the Sussexes were concerning and being "taken very seriously."
"The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," the statement reads.
In a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan, who is African American, said her husband Prince Harry revealed his family’s concerns over Archie’s skin tone, as well as the security he would be entitled to, ahead of his birth on May 6, 2019.
“In those months when I was pregnant… we have in tandem the conversation of ‘he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” Meghan told interviewer Oprah Winfrey.
She has suggested that the Buckingham Palace was “perpetuating falsehoods” about her and Prince Harry, in a clip from an upcoming interview with Oprah Winfrey released by CBS late Wednesday.
Asked by Winfrey how she felt about the Palace hearing her speak out, Markle replied: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there’s an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.”
The interview was recorded before the Times newspaper published allegations that Markle was subject to a bullying complaint while living in Kensington Palace.
The Royals had initially refused to comment on the matter, primarily because they are occupied with Prince Philip’s health who is still admitted in the hospital. However, the HR team of Buckingham Palace has now confirmed that it will launch an investigation into the allegations. The team said in its statement that the Palace has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for years and that policy does not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace. The team will also invite members of the staff, including those who are no longer in service, to see if details of the incident can be uncovered.
