Mumbai: German carmaker Audi will soon launch SUVs and other luxury-class offerings on Indian roads, reports CNBC-TV18.
CNBC-TV18 caught up with Ralph Weiyler, a member on the Audi board, and asked him why his company was starting production in India. He said, "The main reason is that we have to have a competitive product offer and this can be based only effectively on good prices. One has disadvantages when one imports cars, instead of producing the cars. That is why we will step into the Indian market."
On the company’s India plans, he said, "We see that there is a limited potential from the very beginning. Perhaps next year, something around 1000 cars, or 800 cars, or something in this range is probably what we want to do."
He further stated, "We want to expand our customer base; we want to develop the brand and to be fit for the moment when the Indian market really takes off. We think that based on the very positive autonomical development in India, the car market will develop and also the premium market will develop."
