Bugatti Chiron: World's most powerful, fastest production car unveiled

The Bugatti Chiron, the replacement for the world's fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron Supersport, is a car that knows how to keep a promise, picking up exactly where its predecessor left off.

Therefore it is the world's most powerful and fastest series production car. And although there is a clear family resemblance between the new model and the old one, Bugatti is insistent that this is a completely new hypercar.

Under its carbon fiber skin is an 8-liter, quad turbo W16 (imagine two V8 engines, side-by-side) powerplant that can send 1579bhp to its four wheels.

Bugatti says that all of this horsepower will translate into a 0-100km/h time of under 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 261mph.

As well as boosting output, Bugatti has significantly slashed weight. All of the car's outer shell is now carbon fiber and the Chiron tips the scales at 1995kg, meaning that as well as more power, the car also has a much better power-to weight ratio of 741bhp per tonne.

In terms of appearance, the new car may have a similar outline, but it has a much sharper visual personality than the Veyron, with tighter, sculpted lines at the front that cleverly conceal some of the absolutely necessary aerodynamics and a very cleanly tapered rear, dominated by a single strip left-to-right tail lamp.

Inside head and leg-room is much improved thanks to the car being wider and slightly taller than the Veyron, but the quality, in terms of wood, leather, carbon fiber and aluminum on display is in no way diminished.

Bugatti's head Wolfgang Dürheimer said: "The Chiron is the quintessential ultimate super sports car: ultra-modern, incredibly fast, agile and powerful with a stylistically demanding design and the highest possible levels of comfort."

However, the new Chiron is just the beginning. An even faster sports model and a convertible will also be coming and the company promises that the performance figures given for the car revealed on Tuesday evening are expected to get even better over the course of the next 12 months.

"Our customers form an exclusive group of automobile collectors who are searching for the very best," said Dürheimer.
