Uber's new artificial intelligence laboratory will be run by the recently acquired start-up Geometric Intelligence to optimize the service and work on its self-driving car project, the company announced Monday, December 5.
As part of its mission to launch self-driving, rideshare cars onto the streets and improve its overall delivery services, Uber has established a new research group called AI Labs.
The group will be staffed predominantly by members of Uber's recent acquisition Geometric Intelligence, an AI startup founded in 2014, confirming Uber's intention to develop innovative AI speech and image recognition software.
Jeff Holden, Chief Product Officer at Uber explained that the company is "still very much in the early innings of machine intelligence" and that the announcement "represents Uber's commitment to advancing the state of the art, driven by our vision that moving people and things in the physical world can be radically faster, safer and accessible to all."
