Indian American Arun Sarin is one of the top contenders, says Wall Street Journal.

New York: Indian American Arun Sarin, who recently moved out as the Vodafone Group CEO, is leading the race for the job of CEO for Yahoo, the top internet search engine and website.

Sarin, if selected, would replace Jerry Yang as the Yahoo CEO. Yang, co-founder of Yahoo, had recently announced to quit as CEO.

"Among those being considered is Arun Sarin, who retired as chief executive of Vodafone Group PLC in July, according to people familiar with the matter," The Wall Street Journal said in a news report.

It said that Yahoo directors steering the search for a new chief executive are moving closer to a recommendation and have authorised checking references on a few key candidates. A final decision is likely to be weeks away at the earliest, it said.

Sarin, 54, headed Vodafone for five years before retiring in July this year. Vodafone is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies.

The Wall Street Journal added: "Yahoo board had been seeking a seasoned technology executive with experience in running a public company from the start, and Sarin, who meets those credentials, continues to remain in contention, according to people familiar with the matter."
