New Delhi: Few passengers who decided to fly Continental airlines to Delhi on Diwali knew that an elaborate send off was waiting for them at the Newark International Airport.
Terminal C at Newark International Airport appeared ready to host a wedding reception with the statues of the Indian deities, elephant replicas, flowers and balloons.
The occasion ? Continental Airlines? inaugural direct flight from India to USA.
Continental has become the first US airline to fly a daily nonstop between Newark International Airport and Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Consulate General of India, New York, Neelam Deo said, ?With Indo-US relations taking off we feel it?s a great time to provide this service to Indian travelers.?
She added that Continental was providing cheaper tickets and nonstop flights to one of the hottest aviation markets in the world currently ? New Delhi.
Delhi is the sixth trans-Atlantic route launched by Continental in 2005 as the company pursues an aggressive international growth strategy.
The Boeing 777 aircraft can carry 48 passengers in business class and up to 253 in economy.
The nonstop flight will cut travel time between New York and Delhi by over two and a half hours when compared to other connecting service on the other carriers between the two cities.
According to President, Continental Airlines, Jeffery A. Smisek, ? India is the key driver of the global economy and has the second fastest rate of growth after China. It?s the largest trade partner of the US and there?s no place better to start a non-stop flight at.?
However it's a first for many passengers and they don't know what it means to be airborne for so long.
A few passengers feel that sitting in one place for 19 hours at a stretch may be a taxing experience.
However most others feel that with no lost luggage due to connecting flights, no long layovers, no changing flights with kids in tow and no additional security checks, Continental is a great way to travel.
