India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services have been launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius at a virtual ceremony on Monday, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth, and Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

How To Make QR-Based Payments In Sri Lanka Using UPI?

India’s UPI services in Sri Lanka will be facilitated through Sri Lanka’s LankaPay.

Step 1: Indian citizens visiting Sri Lanka need to activate UPI international on their preferred UPI app for making QR code-based merchant payments in Sri Lanka.

Step 2: Scan the LankaPay QR code

Step 3: Enter the amount

Step 4: Enter the UPI PIN

The payment is successful!

The RBI and NPCI International have collaborated Central Bank of Sri Lanka and LankaPay for the UPI payment facility.

How To Make QR-Based Payments In Mauritius Using UPI?

In the case of Mauritius, the Reserve Bank of India and the Bank of Mauritius have collaborated to facilitate UPI QR code-based payment solutions in India and Mauritius. A total of 5,000 Indian tourists visit Mauritius in a year, and 30,000 Mauritius citizens visit India.

Step 1: Indian citizens visiting Mauritius need to activate UPI international on their UPI apps for making QR code-based merchant payments in Mauritius.

Step 2: Scan the QR code

Step 3: Enter the amount

Step 4: Review and confirm with the OTP.

The payment is successful!

Apart from this, RuPay cards issued in India will now be accepted in Mauritius. Through RuPay Switch network, these cards can be used to withdraw money from ATMs in Mauritius and can be swiped at the PoS there.

In February 2023, UPI was also launched in Singapore, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong witnessing the launch of cross-border connectivity between UPI and PayNow via videoconferencing. The linkage allowed transfer of fund between India and Singapore in a swift and cost-effective way just by using phone number.

Apart from this, PhonePe also earlier enabled payments abroad and has said all international merchant outlets in the UAE, Singapore, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan that have a local QR code are supported.
