There is good news for all the people staying in the city of Mumbai, as they are set to get some relief from everyday traffic jams. On Wednesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the first double-decker flyover with a metro viaduct in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The 1 km long flyover integrates a metro viaduct and a road flyover for Metro Line-9 in Mira Bhayandar in the Thane district. This flyover is reportedly expected to play a significant role in improving the traffic flow and reducing congestion at major intersections on Mira Road. Metro Line 9 is reportedly an extension of the Red Line from Andheri to the Mumbai International Airport and Dahisar to Mira Road.

During the inauguration event, CM Shinde mentioned that this construction is an unmatchable achievement for the state. He said, “The construction of the double-decker flyover with a metro viaduct in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is a significant achievement for Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra. This project addresses traffic-related issues, will save both time and fuel and is a testament to modern technology and efficient planning. It will accelerate MMR’s development and improve overall traffic flow and passenger convenience.”

The flyover was built using advanced technology with separate levels for the metro and vehicular transportation, aimed at saving significant travel time for commuters. This will also help the people of the state to save fuel. It features modern amenities, including furniture, signage, and lighting, in accordance with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway regulations.

The makers of the flyover faced multiple challenges, including the relocation of the main double-circuit Dahanu-Versova power line, which was shifted about 3 km and elevated to 75 metres, making it the second-highest power channel in the state.

Speaking at the event, MMRDA commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said, “The double-decker flyover is part of MMRDA’s new approach to urban transportation, addressing space constraints in Mumbai and its suburban parts. It provides a modern solution to meet the city’s transportation needs, reducing congestion and offering a faster, safer, and more convenient journey. This project is very crucial for Mumbai’s growth and future urban development.”
