Changing Your Display Name

Open and log in to the ChatGPT Platform subpage. This page is located here. When logging in, use the credentials of the account needing the display name change.

Look for and adjust the box labeled "Name". This box is your display name on ChatGPT. There are two other boxes - Email and Password, which remain unchangeable and disabled to both the credentialed user and OpenAI.

Make sure your new display name conforms to OpenAI's name formats. It must be no longer than 96 characters, contain no numbers, and only certain punctuation. But it can have spaces - and often does, such as, for example, if you want your last name to appear. Use the name you'd like to be called.

Submit the name change. To do this, click the green "Save" button below the Password box.

Wait for the success box to appear. The box will say "User profile successfully updated" and will float down from the top of the browser screen, then close a second or two later.

Open ChatGPT. If you haven't done so, log in to this account there, too. If you use ChatGPT through a mobile device or computer app (Windows 10 and 11 have them), make sure to force-close the app entirely and restart it. If you use ChatGPT through the website, refresh it. Most browsers have a keyboard shortcut F5 or Fn+F5(on a laptop/notebook), though all browsers also have a refresh button, which can be used in this situation.

Check that ChatGPT shows the corrected display name.

Changing Your Name through Interactions

Open ChatGPT. ChatGPT can be found here. Since losing the "openai" in the URL, this uber-popular chatbot hasn't suffered and only gotten better.

Avoid using the newer "Temporary chat" feature to set the following method.

Introduce yourself inside a chat. Tell it, "Can you call me, (name)?" Avoid adding "For this chat" before "Can you call me, (Name)". This will also create a temporary chat, which won't make the change universal to all chats from that point forward.

Wait for ChatGPT to respond. It should add a saved detail - called a memory - to your Memories page. Adding memories helps it learn to know you better and associate your living information with its ways of knowing you. (If you'd rather not have it saved, you can later clear up these details in the "manage memories" dialog box of your Personalization Settings.

Changing it through Your Settings

Add your name to your Custom Instructions settings, if it's wanted. Open this settings page.

Click the "Off" button to the "Custom instructions" label.

Click and type your desired name into the "What should ChatGPT call you?" box.

Save your changes. Click the "Save" button in the bottom right corner of the box.
