67 years of Rambaiyin Kaadhal: This Tamil Film Narrated The Mythological Tale Of Rambha
The story was about Rambha, one of the star dancers of Indra’s Devaloka Sabha and her love story with a mortal from Earth.

The South Indian cinema saw the production of many mythological films earlier. Films made on mythological characters were extremely appealing in the early ages of filmmaking. Tamil cinema produced two films on the same mythology in a gap of 17 years. The story was about Rambha, one of the star dancers of Indra’s Devaloka Sabha and her love story with a mortal from Earth.

Both the movies were named Rambaiyin Kaadhal. One was released in 1939, the second was released in 1956. Recently, the latter completed 67 years. It was released on September 28 1956. The story starts when Rambha comes to Earth to see the splendour of the planet. She was mesmerised by the view along the river. She lingered there a bit longer, losing herself in the beauty of the Yamuna, which caused her to be late for her dance performance in the court. Rambha is then cursed by Indra to turn into a statue next to the Yamuna river, as a result of his rage.

Then, Narada controls his rage and lessens the curse. He requests a cure from Indra. Rambha can return to the court once she has endured enough suffering for her penance, according to Indra, who also concurs. A young man named Muthazhagi, who lives in a village close to the Yamuna River, falls asleep close to the statue, which comes alive as soon as he awakes. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

P Bhanumathi played the leading role of Rambha in the film, while KA Thangavelu played Muthazhagi. The character played by Thangavelu was named Yathbhavishyan in the original, but the name was changed in the remake. Bhanumathi’s majestic beauty and brilliant performance in the film had received the maximum praise. TR Papa’s music and songs greatly elevated the film, which went on to become a big success.
