Iraivan Review: Jayam Ravi And Nayanthara-starrer Lacks Novelty
Iraivan starts with Arjun, portrayed by Jayam Ravi, who is a relentless police officer and believes in delivering justice even if it requires bending rules.

I Ahmed directorial Iraivan was released in theatres on September 28. The movie created immense buzz before the release of the film. Turns out, Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara starrer film is a lacklustre show of brainless psychological thriller and the team has failed terribly when it comes to crafting the characters of the film. The film simply starts with a psychopath and as we proceed further, it shows some stuff randomly tossed in just for the heck of it.

Plot

Iraivan starts with Arjun, portrayed by Jayam Ravi, who is a relentless police officer and believes in delivering justice even if it requires bending rules. Arjun and Andrew (Narain), are on a mission to track down the perpetrator responsible for a series of gruesome incidents in Chennai. As they embark on the journey, a lot of female bodies, naked and mutilated, are discovered. These bodies have one thing in common – smiley faces carved onto them. In a tragic sequence, Andrew loses his life while on duty. However, they had captured the killer, Brahma (Rahul Bose).

The trauma of Andrew’s death prompts Arjun to resign from the police force. However, he resumes his duty after being suspicious of other young women potentially becoming the next victim. This time, the victim could be his fiancée Priya (Nayanthara). During his mission to nab the psycho killer, he discovers a shocking truth.

Review

No doubt Jayam Ravi looks convincing in his role as a police officer and Rahul Bose nails the character of the deranged psycho killer in Iraivan. Despite their brilliant performances, the film fails to leave the audience with an audience rush. The poor screenplay, badly written characters and lack of intent to show a fresh and unique story make it a bad watch. The film strongly echoes the themes that we have already seen in numerous earlier released psychological thrillers.

While it was imperative for the film to inject freshness into the storyline, the makers of Iraivan were disappointed when it came to creating excitement among the audience. In the second half, it is very easy for the audience to predict what will happen next. Speaking of Nayanthara, she struggles to make her presence felt throughout the movie. It is, again, due to her poorly developed character.
