New Zealand and Bangladesh captains Kane Williamson and Shakib Al Hasan both injured themselves on Friday as their teams met at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 group game in Chennai. While Williamson retired hurt after getting hit by the ball on his hand, Shakib seemed to have suffered from cramps and had to undergo scans on his injury after the match.
The Kiwis continued their winning run in the ODI World Cup as they picked up a third consecutive win to cement their place at the top of the points table, after beating Bangladesh by 8 wickets.
Williamson had scored 78 runs before deciding to step aside, whereas Daryl Mitchell scored 89 runs as the Black Caps completed a chase of 248 runs with 7.1 overs to spare. Earlier, Bangladesh had scored 245 as Lockie Ferguson picked up three wickets and won the Player of the Match award for his heroics.

The only downside for New Zealand from their clinical win over Bangladesh was the injury to Williamson.
“Just made holding the bat a little tough. Secondary to the thumb,” said Williamson when quizzed about the knock to his hand in the post-match interview. The 33-year-old was struck on his left thumb in the 37th over of the inning after copping a blow from one of the Bangladesh fielders.

Kane had earlier completed a miraculous recovery after sustaining an injury in the first game of IPL 2023 before returning just in the nick of time to be fit for the World Cup. Speaking about the injury on Williamson’s hands, Ian Smith had said on-air that the skipper would undergo an X-ray to determine the extent of the injury.

Shakib, on the other hand, didn’t turn up for the post-match interview, he was attended to by the physios on field, but Najmul Hossain Shanto came out later and revealed that his skipper had gone for scans.
More updates would be available once the results of the scans are out and surely that’s not good news for Bangladesh fans, the last thing they would want is an injury scare to their captain who has been performing very well, individually.
