Pakistan suffered shocking defeats against the United States of America and India in the first two matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 to crash out of the tournament from the group stage itself. It was the first time in T20 World Cup history that Pakistan failed to progress from the first round. Many fans and former greats of the game blamed captain Babar Azam for the team’s poor show in the T20 World Cup and demanded his resignation.
After Pakistan’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made multiple changes in the backroom staff, sacked Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq as selectors, and is likely to take a big call on Babar’s future as captain in the coming days.
Changes in the Pakistan cricket set-up are not new, and this has affected the team’s performance on the field. Taking note of constant changes in the Pakistan cricket team as well as the board, former Pakistani captain and legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi took to a brutal dig at PCB and blamed changes time and again for the team’s poor show.
According to him, the administration needs to give a proper time of at least three years for any system to work in order to get the desired results.
“When you change or bring in any new structure, you must give the system time. Every year, a new chairman comes, and a new system is introduced. Things don’t work this way,” Shahid Afridi told Sports24.
“All the senior board members and senior players should sit together at one table and make a plan. Then let that plan be executed for three years. Let the results come. If you keep changing the system every year, what results can you expect?” he added.
Ramiz Raza was PCB’s chairman in 2022, but he was replaced by Najam Sethi towards the end of the year, and in mid-2023, Zaka Ashraf was appointed for the role in place of Sethi. In February 2024, Ashraf was replaced as PCB chairman by Syed Mohsin Raza, and he sacked Shaheen Afridi as T20I captain just after one series to hand back the leadership to Babar Azam.
