Speculations have been rife about the potential ending of MS Dhoni’s illustrious career since the commencement of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Former Indian batter Suresh Raina added a spark to the debate while doing commentary during the match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, May 12. It was the last league game for the Yellow Army at Chepauk this season. Referring to the same, Raina was asked by his fellow commentator Abhinav Mukund if the RR fixture had marked Dhoni’s last assignment at the iconic M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
“Obviously, I have to ask you this question. Is this MS Dhoni’s last game here at Chepauk?”, Mukund asked. Raina, a CSK legend himself, came up with a tricky response, which might have given hope to millions of fans. The “Chinna Thala” emphatically said, “Definitely not,” before jumping into a burst of laughter.

These phrases became viral after MS Dhoni was asked about his retirement plan by Harsha Bhogle after the 2021 IPL. It was the fourth title-winning campaign for CSK and Dhoni had already bid adieu to international cricket. At the post-match ceremony of the IPL final, Bhogle asked the India great if he would take retirement from the franchise tournament as well. In reply to the question, Dhoni smilingly said, “Definitely not.”

Considering MS Dhoni’s cult status in Indian cricket, it will be hard for many fans to see him draw curtains on his IPL career. When CSK claimed their fifth title last season, many felt Dhoni would have announced his retirement. After the final in Ahmedabad, the legendary captain, however, said that he would like to continue for one more year as it would have been a gift to his fans.
MS Dhoni has kept his word. He has featured in all matches for CSK in the ongoing IPL despite stepping down from the leadership role ahead of the season. He has also treated fans with his finishing prowess on several occasions.
Dhoni has been associated with the Chennai-based franchise since the inaugural 2008 edition of the IPL. Under his leadership, CSK have reached the Playoffs in 12 seasons– the most by any team in history. With Ruturaj Gaikwad in charge, the five-time champions can make it happen this time as well by overcoming Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final league game, scheduled for May 18.
