'He is Eager to Play Red-ball Cricket': After Missing Central Contract, Shreyas Iyer Plots His Test Comeback
Shreyas Iyer was one of the two India players who was snubbed from the BCCI annual retainership list earlier this year.

Middle order batter Shreyas Iyer is eager to make Test return and will get into the red-ball mode with the Buchi Babu Tournament in Tamil Nadu that gets underway from Thursday. Iyer was dropped for the final three Tests of a five-match series against England earlier this year and there were reports that the batter also complained of back spasms.

Iyer was reportedly asked to play Ranji Trophy after the National Cricket Academy cleared him of any fitness concerns. However, the 29-year-old skipped a game and a miffed BCCI didn’t offer him a central contract.

Iyer though maintained his back was giving him problem since the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. He then led Kolkata Knight Riders during IPL 2024 as the franchise went onto claim the title.

He made his India comeback earlier this month with a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka but only managed 38 runs across three innings.

With India set to host Bangladesh for a two-Test series in September, Iyer is aiming to earn his place back into the squad.

“Shreyas showed keen interest in playing for Mumbai in the Buchi Babu Tournament. He is eager to play red-ball cricket,” Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) chief selector Sanjay Patil told mid-day.

Along with Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav will also turn out for Mumbai in the competition with Sarfaraz Khan named captain.

“Though Shreyas and Surya will be playing only one match, it will be a strong message to other state teams that Test players are also keen to play for Mumbai,” Patil said.

In a statement on Tuesday, MCA announced Iyer’s inclusion in Mumbai’s Buchi Babu tournament squad.

“Iyer will play for Mumbai at the Buchi Babu Invitation Tournament. He will be playing the Mumbai v Jammu & Kashmir match from August 27 at Coimbatore,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan, who was also dropped from the central contract list for skipping domestic cricket, will be leading Jharkhand in the competition.
