There seems to be no stopping Yashasvi Jaiswal, who continues to create waves in the world of Test cricket with his swashbuckling batting skill, notching up two double centuries in the past three Test matches he has played against England.
His fiery aggression has enabled all those who witness the same to draw comparisons with various legendary batters alike, and one who has joined in on the conversation is none other than the ‘Universe Boss’ and former West Indies batter, Chris Gayle.
Gayle, in an interview with AFP, who said Jaiswal reminded him of the “attacking version” of his former West Indies team-mate Shivnarine Chanderpaul, warned against meddling with the India rising star’s technique.
“A lot will be expected of him as he goes on but they should just let him continue to flow,” he said on the eve of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi starting Friday.
“He’s an attacking player, you see that in his T20 cricket as well…That’s in his nature as well and they shouldn’t try to curb him or try to change him.”
Gayle also touched on the comments passed by England opener Ben Duckett, who claimed that England’s aggression with the bat in Test cricket has forced their opponents to play differently, as the West Indian stated that Jaiswal’s success can rather be credited to his coach Jwala Singh.
“I don’t think he (Jaiswal) learnt it from England. That style of play he developed with his coach and mentor (Jwala Singh). He’s just phenomenal.
“It’s like the guy has been playing for 20 years, unbelievable. I just hope he can keep it up.”
Jaiswal scored 209 in India’s first innings in the second Test at Visakhapatnam and then smashed an unbeaten 214 runs in the second essay at Rajkot to contribute to the home team’s historic 434-run victory over England.
The 22-year-old joined a select band of seven cricketers to score double centuries in two consecutive Tests including two Indians – Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli.
The Indian team will be hoping that the youngster maintains his form as they will aim to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series when they square off against England for the fourth Test today at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi today.
