After the KKR vs MI match, the Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, bringing down the remaining spots to just three among the seven teams in the fray now. Rajasthan Royals need one more win to seal their playoff spot, while the 3rd and 4th place finish has intensified with CSK, SRH, DC, LSG, RCB, and GT in the mid-table scrum. Here’s a look at the possible scenarios and what the teams need to do to make the playoffs.
IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios
Kolkata Knight Riders – KKR have qualified and are at the top of the IPL 2024 points table with 18 points.
Remaining matches
- GT vs KKR
- RR vs KKR
KKR are assured of a top 4 finish after they beat MI in the rain-curtailed match in Kolkata last night, and with two more games remaining, they will now be looking to seal the top-two spot. They can go up to 22 points and that will equal the record for the most points accumulated in the league stages. They face GT in Ahmedabad and then RR in Jaipur in their last two fixtures and it will be their final league game against Rajasthan that could decide the top-two finish of IPL 2024.

Rajasthan Royals – RR are currently placed second in the points table with 16 points.
Remaining matches
- CSK vs RR
- RR vs PBKS
- RR vs KKR
A win in their last three games will mean they reach 18 points and all but secure their spot in the playoffs as only three other teams (KKR, CSK and SRH or LSG) can reach 18 points. With KKR already qualified, RR cannot afford to slip up and will first look to get the Q when they meet CSK and then look for a top-two finish. They last two league games are at home and will round off their league stages going up against KKR.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – SRH are currently placed third in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.
Remaining matches
- SRH vs GT
- SRH vs PBKS
SRH maybe slightly ahead in terms of sealing the third IPL 2024 playoff spot, but there is no guarantee that SRH can get through. With 14 points and two games remaining SRH can reach the 18-point mark ensuring a playoff spot, but one loss in either of their last two games will make them vulnerable. CSK, DC, LSG could equal SRH on points and if SRH go on to lose both their last two games, they could potentially fall behind the other three teams also in the points table. SRH’s opponents in their last two fixtures are GT and PBKS, but one thing that will work to their advantage is that both the last two games are at home.
Chennai Super Kings – CSK are currently placed fourth in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.
Remaining matches
- CSK vs RR
- RCB vs CSK
CSK’s playoff chances took a major blow after their 35-run loss to GT last night, as they now have two matches remaining and are now level on matches and points with DC and LSG. However, due to their super NRR, they maintain the 4th spot, but it is imperative now for them not to lose their last games. It will be a tough ask as one of the teams is the red-hot Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals and the other being Virat Kohli-inspired RCB, who are on a four-match winning streak at the moment. They can hope to reach a maximum of 16 points if they win both their games, but so can one from DC and LSG. SRH can potentially reach 18, while RR and KKR too can be out of reach of CSK if they win the majority of their remaining matches.
Delhi Capitals – DC are currently placed fifth in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.
Remaining matches
- RCB vs DC
- DC vs LSG
DC are in the mid-table scrum alongside CSK and LSG. They only have two games left – against RCB away and LSG at home. And it is imperative for them to win both the games to go up to 16 points and hope other results go their way, so that they can sneak into the top 4. DC have registered two wins in their last three games. A loss in either of their last two games should be curtains to their campaign.
Lucknow Super Giants – LSG are currently placed sixth in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.
Remaining matches
- DC vs LSG
- MI vs LSG
The harrowing loss to SRH have dented LSG’s net run-rate significantly, and like DC they are left with two games, and wins in both games will be their priority. That will take them to 16 points and then they will have to hope for the current top 4 teams to lose multiple games to make their way up to the top 4. A loss in either of their last two games, should be curtains to their campaign.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB are currently in seventh position in the points table with 10 points.
Remaining matches
- RCB vs DC
- RCB vs CSK
With the win over PBKS at Dharamsala, RCB kept their slim playoff chances alive and ended PBKS’ campaign. They are now left with two matches – both against higher-ranked opponents – DC and CSK. Their equation is simple, win both game and reach 14 points and hope their net run-rate remains better than other teams who would be tied on points with them. Lose to DC or CSK and that will be the end of the road for the Faf du Plessis-led this IPL season.
Gujarat Titans – GT are currently placed 8th in the points table with 10 points
Remaining matches
- GT vs KKR
- SRH vs GT
With a 35-run win over CSK, GT avoided elimination from the playoff race, for the time being, and now with 10 points in their kitty with two matches remaining, they are in the exact same situation as RCB. Win their remaining two games and they can reach 14 points. From there on it will be up to the results of other matches going their way for them to have a chance at playing their third straight playoff. NRR will also come into play if they are tied on points with other teams. But the issue for GT is that they are facing the current table-topper KKR and the marauding SRH in their final two games.
Mumbai Indians – MI are currently placed at the 9th spot in the points table with 8 points.
Remaining matches
- MI vs LSG
MI were already knocked out of the IPL 2024 playoff race and with a loss in their penultimate game against table-topper KKR, they remain on 8 points with only one game to go, they can now hope to end their campaign on a high and try and avoid the wooden spoon this season.
Punjab Kings – PBKS are currently 10th in the points table with 8 points
Remaining matches
- RR vs PBKS
- SRH vs PBKS
The 60-run loss to RCB at Dharamsala leaves PBKS with no chance to qualify for playoff in IPL 2024. Enduring their 8th loss in 12 matches, PBKS can now potentially reach 12 points if they will their final two games, but that will not be enough for them to crack the top 4.
