History was made by the Afghans today at the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final, but perhaps not the kind they would have wanted as they registered the lowest-ever total scored in a T20 World Cup semi-final and their lowest-ever in T20Is.
Afghanistan were bundled out for a dismal total of 56 runs in 11.5 overs, as the likes of Jansen, Shamsi, Rabada, and Nortje ran riot over them in the first innings.
Their total of 56 runs became the lowest-evet total to be registered in a T20 World Cup semi-final, and the 7th lowest total scored in the T20 World Cup history.
To add insult to injury, this was also Afghanistan’s lowest-ever total recorded in T20Is.
It is hard to pick out any positives for the spirited Afghans, who were slaughtered without any mercy by South Africa’s bowling order, who took their turns toying and inflicting misery on the Afghanistan batting order.
The pace trio of Marco Jansen (3/16), Kagiso Rabada (2/14) and Anrich Nortje (2/7) shared seven wickets among themselves while spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (3/6) claimed three wickets.
It all started with Marco Jansen, who struck immediately in the first over to remove the in-form Gurbaz, and the chips just continued to fall from then onwards.
Jansen would go on to scalp Gulbadin in his next over. This would be followed by ace pacer Rabada, who scalped two wickets in a maiden off his first over, to disgrace the Afghan top-order batters.
Before they knew it, Afghanistan were down 5 wickets by the end of the powerplay, standing at an abysmal 28-5, the first time a team has ever lost 5 wickets within the powerplay in a T20 World Cup semi-final.
A rudderless Afghanistan looked up at Rashid Khan, but even he couldn’t do anything, as the Proteas continued to pile the misery on, now in the form of Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi.
Nortje’s pace was too much to handle for anyone, as the pacer castled Rashid Khan to kill all hopes.
Shamsi, on the other end, wove magic for SA and trouble for AFG, as the leggie scalped three wickets in his two overs to clean up the tail and bowl them out for a historic 56 runs, the lowest total ever in a T20 World Cup semi-final.
