Sanjay Manjrekar Feels Selectors Took a More 'Traditional And Cautious Route' in Selecting India's T20 World Cup Squad
Sanjay Manjrekar feels selectors took the ‘safe’ route while picking India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Indian selectors took the ‘safe’ route with the T20 World Cup 2024 squad. The cricketer-turned-commentator felt that the team management opted for experience rather than youth for the competition.

In his column for the Hindustan Times, Manjrekar wrote, “It felt as though the Indian selectors played it safe with their selections for the T20 World Cup squad. In picking Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, it was a clear message that they were not yet ready to commit to the youth.” He even acknowledged how the cautious approach could not stop India from showcasing a dynamic brand of cricket.

“The way India have batted so far conveys that even though selections have taken a more traditional and cautious route, the brand of cricket on show is going to be modern and dynamic,” he added.

Sanjay Manjrekar also wrote about how India’s new approach to their T20 World Cup 2024 is something that fans had not witnessed previously. He wrote, “The brand of cricket India are playing in this WC is one we have never seen before, and something we are trying to come to terms with.”

Referring to India’s Super Eight clash against Bangladesh, Sanjay Manjrekar highlighted how the fans were disappointed to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli depart early. The former cricketer felt that India were on the right track as they had plenty of batters left. “India were going at nine runs an over despite losing Rohit and Virat by the ninth over on a 150-par score pitch. India were going fine; they still had plenty of batting left — six batters, to be specific, with 11 overs to go,” he felt.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had a positive showing against Bangladesh on June 22 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The Indian skipper gave his side a good start with a quickfire 11-ball 23. Virat Kohli followed with a fine 37-run knock before Rishabh Pant added 36 more. These knocks proved to be crucial as India, eventually, recorded a comfortable victory by 50 runs.

India are now preparing to take on Australia in their final Super 8 game of the T20 World Cup 2024.
