'There Is A Buzz About West Indies Cricket Again': Rovman Powell Optimistic About Future of WI Cricket After T20 World Cup Exit
For Powell though, as heartbreaking as the loss was, the bigger picture proved to be one of victory, for West Indies cricket witnessed a revival through the tournament.

The West Indies may feel that their dreams and hopes for the T20 World Cup have been crushed currently, but skipper Rovman Powell believes that this is merely the start of a turning tide for the culture of cricket in the Caribbean again.

West Indies were sent out to bat first, by Aiden Markram. Despite a horror start, leaving them at 5/2, Roston Chase stepped up when he was needed the most, and piled on 52 runs to power his side to a subpar total of 135 runs.

After a couple of overs into the chase from SA, consistent showers ensued, which could have rained on the West Indies’ hopes had the match been abandoned, but lucky for them, a revised target of 123 from 17 overs was set for South Africa.

Powell’s men fought till the very end, as the West Indies pushed South Africa to the brink of elimination with a clinical bowling showcase, but Marco Jansen weathered the literal and metaphorical storm to lead the Proteas to a 3-wicket win in the last over.

“Credit to the boys for fighting till the end. As a batting group this is a performance we want to forget, we didn’t bat well in the middle overs. We lost wickets in clusters and that always breaks the back of the batting team. It was a commendable effort,” stated skipper Rovman Powell in a post-match interview.

For Powell though, as heartbreaking as the loss was, the bigger picture proved to be one of victory, for West Indies cricket witnessed a revival through the tournament.

After years of losing their standard and fans in the international level, hosting the T20 World Cup and the performance of the national team ensured that the Caribbean was yet again reminded of the gentleman’s game.

“We haven’t won the World Cup or reached the semifinal but we have played some good cricket in the last 12 months. There is a buzz among the supporters about West Indies cricket again and that is something we take away. We really appreciate the support we have got,” stated a proud Powell.

With their win, South Africa now joins England as the semi-final qualifiers from Super Eight Group 2.
