'We Weren't Up to The Mark': Babar Azam Reflects on Pakistan's Heart-breaking Loss Against India in T20 World Cup 2024
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam did not pin any part of the blame on his batters for failing to chase the target, stating that it was the responsibility of the top-order batters such as himself to help aid his team to victory.

Cricket is the gentleman’s game, but a cruel one at it as well. And the brunt of it was bore by Pakistan, who suffered an embarrassing 6-run defeat against arch-rivals India in the T20 World Cup on Sunday.

Pakistan’s pacers reigned supreme over the batting order of the Men in Blue who, after making an impressive stand of 81/3 in the first 10 overs, were bundled out for a meagre 119 runs, the first time India were bowled out by Pakistan in T20Is.

What seemed like an easy win for Pakistan turned out to be a nightmare, as talisman pacer Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya brought down hell on the Pakistan batting order as well, leading to a debilitating 6-run loss for Pakistan at the end of it all.

“We bowled well. In the batting, we lost back-to-back wickets and had too many dot balls. Our tactic was simple, play normally. Just keep the strike rotation and find the odd boundary. But in that crucial period, we had too many dot balls,” said Babar in a post-match interview.

Despite their fall of wickets, Pakistan were still on track to possibly win the match, needing a doable 37 runs in the last 5 overs. But, once Bumrah scalped the likes of Rizwan in the 14th over, the batting order crumbled, failing to reach their target.

But, skipper Babar did not pin any part of the blame on his batters, stating that it was the responsibility of the top-order batters such as himself to help aid his team to victory.

“We can’t expect much from tailenders. Our mind was to utilize the first overs in batting. But one wicket down, and again we weren’t up to the mark in the first six. The pitch looked decent, the ball was coming on nicely. It was a little bit slow, and some balls had extra bounce. But, we now have to win the last two matches. We will sit and discuss our mistakes,” stated a humbled Babar.

India now stand at the top of their group, with 2 wins out of 2 matches, right above USA, while Pakistan have incurred 2 straight losses so far in this T20 World Cup campaign.
