India’s famous win over Bangladesh in Kanpur came from an unlikely scenario. With two days of play being washed out due to rain and a wet outfield, the Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma received massive praise from the former Australian wicketkeeper-batter, Brad Haddin who lauded the Indian captain’s approach to force a result.
Haddin in the LiSTNR Sport podcast on YouTube, elaborated on his thoughts behind India’s aggressive batting approach in the first innings. The Indian unit went on to smash records for the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 in Test cricket in the process as well.
“But it wasn’t about how many runs they scored as silly as that sounds it was about having enough time. Find enough time in the game so they can bowl Bangladesh out,” he commented.
The 46-year-old suggested that the reason behind the aggressive batting display was so that they had enough time to get rid of the Bangladesh batters in the second innings making a result on the cards.
“They took the game on they went at eight an over but it was all about giving themselves enough time to bowl Bangladesh out. My hat goes off to the support staff”, he added.
The former Aussie gloveman, also praised Rohit’s leadership which resulted in a stunning win. Haddin reckons that Rohit has always had a team-first approach when leading the side and hailed their efforts for forcing a result, rather than settling for a draw.
“Rohit Sharma has always been like this. He thinks win first and then everything second and what they did with the way they played they gave themselves a chance to win a Test match that was going to fizzle out into a draw, I love the style of cricket. They could have easily had a really good net session, got a draw and no one would have said anything,” Haddin shared.
“The mindset of Rohit Sharma is to find a way to manipulate a result. To say okay if we bat for x what we have to chase later and teams aren’t scared of going at 10 and over for 20 overs now because of the way T20 and how explosive some of their batters are so I take my hat off to India because they gave themselves a chance to win the game,” he added.
As a result of the win in Kanpur, Team India maintain their stronghold at the top of the World Test Championship standings. They will need to pick up three wins and a draw in the coming games. India will be up against New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home, followed by the tour to Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in a five-match affair.
