The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday appointed the new Vice Chancellors (VCs) for Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri and Cluster University (CU) Jammu. As per the order issued by the J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha – who is also the Chancellor of the J&K Universities, Prof Department of West Asian and North African studies Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) – Jawaid Iqbal has been appointed as VC BGSBU Rajouri for a period of three years and Professor KS Chandrasekar, Senior Professor, Institute of Management in Kerala has been appointed as new VC for Cluster University (CU) Jammu for a period of three years.
The orders will come into effect from the date on which the VCs take over the charge. The order reads that the appointments have been made in exercise of the powers vested with the J&K LG under clause 2 (1) of the statutes forming the schedule of the Jammu and University Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Act 2002 and Section 12(1) of the Srinagar and Jammu Cluster Universities Act, 2016. On October 20, 2023, it was reported that the three-year term of VCs BGSBU, Cluster University Jammu (CUJ) was nearing its end.
The three-year term of incumbent VC BGSBU expired in February 2024, while the three-year term of VC CU Jammu Professor Bechan Lal expired in January this year.
Professor KS Chandrasekhar, who has been appointed as the new VC CU Jammu, has more than 28 years of teaching, research and consulting experience in the field of Management studies including 13 years as a Full Professor. He is one of the founding members of the Department of Management Studies of Alagappa University and later joined IMK, University of Kerala in 2002. Since then he has occupied various positions including that of Acting Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Dean of Faculty of Management Studies, Chairman-BOS in Business Management for Pass and PG, Campus Director, School of Business Management and Legal Studies Director and HoD of IMK.
Dr KS Chandrasekar was nominated as the external member of the Academic Council of the Central University of Kerala for four years during which he was instrumental in launching the School of Business Studies.
Professor Jawaid Iqbal the new VC for BGSBU Rajouri is a highly accomplished expert in the field of International Relations, based at Aligarh Muslim University in India. He has held prominent academic and administrative roles, including Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the Faculty of International Studies, and Chairmanship of several departments, such as the Department of West Asian and North African Studies, Department of South African and Brazilian Studies, and the Department of Foreign Languages at AMU, Aligarh.
He has served on various Boards of Studies, Committees, and Advisory Boards within the institution. Dr Iqbal’s contributions extend beyond administration, as he has played various roles in research, development, promotion, curriculum design, and other administrative capacities at AMU.
