Hyderabad And Prayagraj Set New Standards For Graduate Salaries In IIITs, Surpasses Many IITs
For the academic year 2022-23, IIIT Hyderabad recorded a median annual salary of Rs 30.30 lakh.

IIIT Hyderabad has once again set a remarkable trend in on-campus recruitment, outperforming even the prestigious IITs in terms of average salary packages. For the academic year 2022-23, IIIT Hyderabad recorded a median annual salary of Rs 30.30 lakh, significantly higher than that of IIT Bombay, Delhi and Madras which stood at Rs 24 lakh. In the recent NIRF rankings released by the Central Education Department, IIIT Hyderabad stood out for exceptional on-campus placement results. Out of 154 students who completed the four-year B.Tech program at IIIT Hyderabad, 140 got jobs, with 70 students receiving offers of more than Rs 30 lakh per annum. 14 students opted for higher education.

This achievement underlines the growing reputation of the institution, especially considering that the average salary in the 2015-16 academic year was only Rs 16 lakh. Experts attribute this success to the focused curriculum of IIIT Hyderabad, which offers only Computer Science and ECE specializations, making the students highly sought after in the job market. In comparison, IIT Kharagpur, which came second, recorded a median salary of Rs 24 lakh, with 460 out of 580 students getting jobs. The report does not provide details of the remaining 80 students.

Colleges often report the average annual salary, which is calculated by dividing the total salary of all students by the number of students placed. However, experts believe that this method can be misleading as it may not accurately reflect the distribution of salaries. It is calculated by arranging all salaries in ascending order and finding the median value. For example, if five students receive offers of Rs 50 lakhs, Rs 20 lakhs, Rs 18 lakhs, Rs 15 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs, the median salary would be Rs 18 lakh. This figure represents the point at which half of the students earn more and half earn less, giving a clearer picture of typical earnings.

On the other hand, the IIIT Prayagraj has been making headlines due to its remarkable placement record, where students secure job offers with packages worth lakhs upon graduation. Among the 10 IIITs across the country, the Prayagraj campus has gained special attention lately. Recently, Rusil Patra, a BTech student from the IT Business Informatics branch, was offered a package of Rs 1.02 crore by ADP, a prestigious American company. This is considered the highest package secured by a student from this institute so far.
