'Not Justified': Supreme Court Rules Against Cancelling NEET-UG 2024 Exam Amid Allegations Of Irregularities
Asserting that there was no evidence of systemic question paper leaks or other malpractices on record, the court dismissed pleas seeking cancellation and re-test

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled against conducting a re-test for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 exam, stating that such a measure is ‘not justified’ based on the evidence at hand.

“Cancelling the entire exam is not warranted based on established principles of this court and the evidence presented,” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, leading the bench, stated while delivering the verdict.

Asserting that there was no evidence of systemic question paper leaks or other malpractices on record, the court dismissed pleas seeking cancellation and re-test.

The bench, which also includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, provided the operative part of the judgement, emphasising the future of over two million students, with a detailed judgement to follow.

“There is absence of material to conclude that result of NEET-UG 2024 exam is vitiated or there is systemic breach,” the CJI stated.

During the proceedings, CJI Chandrachud also noted that ordering a fresh exam would have repercussions affecting over 24 lakh students who appeared in this exam.

Additionally, the CJI highlighted potential disruptions to the admission schedule and adverse impacts on the medical education system.

However, the bench acknowledged that the question paper leak in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh and Bihar’s Patna was not in dispute.

Directs NTA To Re-Tally Scores For NEET-UG Physics Question

The apex court also directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to re-evaluate the scores in light of the expert opinion from IIT Delhi concerning a physics question, saying that two options cannot be treated as the correct answers to a question.

“We accept the IIT Delhi report and accordingly NTA shall re-tally the NEET UG result on the basis that option 4 represents the only correct answer to the question,” Chief Justice of India stated.

This decision may affect around 4.22 lakh students losing four marks, including 44 students who achieved perfect scores in the NEET-UG exam 2024.

Earlier today, a panel of three IIT Delhi experts informed the Supreme Court that only one answer was correct, not two, for the contentious physics question in the NEET-UG 2024 examination.
