Gulshan Devaiah’s recent statement on ‘not vibing’ with Ulajh co-star Janhvi Kapoor has taken the internet by a storm. Now in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, he asserts that he doesn’t want to put the blame on her for the same. “I’m not saying it’s my or Janhvi’s fault. There are other ways of getting the job done. I never felt a lack of connect with her while doing a scene. Aisa kuch nahi tha ki mujhe uska muh nahi dekhna tha (laughs)! But you can’t expect a family-like situation on every set,” he tells us.
Looking at the silver lining, Gulshan states that having different approaches as actors pushed them to achieve unimagined goals while working on Ulajh. “Getting along and vibing with someone are two different things. When I saw some of the scenes and the song that we shot (Shaukan), I thought we don’t vibe but nobody can tell. This creative tussle is good as long as you’re not belittling or intentionally harming anyone because it pushes you in directions you wouldn’t have gone. The idea is to be civil and we were very civil,” he says.
Alternatively, Gulshan recalls working with co-stars who he shares a great rapport with off-screen and that helped build an organic chemistry onscreen. Talking about working on Hunterr, That Girl In Yellow Boots and Dahaad, he remarks, “I’ve also worked with friends like Radhika Apte and Kalki Koechlin. We spend a lot of time talking about the scenes, the characters and more importantly, everything else. We can immediately create some sort of chemistry because of the familiarity we have and we use that sense of familiarity. When I was working with Sonakshi Sinha, we really vibed and that helped. But everybody can’t be like that.”
So, was it just their different sensibilities that led him to feel that he and Janhvi don’t vibe? “We’ve very different ways of working. We don’t chit-chat. With Roshan (Mathew), at least, I talked about other things beyond work. But with Janhvi, nothing’s there. Having said that, she’s a professional actor regardless of what the perceptions about her are and we bring the game together because it’s our job,” shares the Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota and A Death In The Gunj actor.
In fact, Gulshan shares a ‘similar working equation’ with Rajkummar Rao too despite the duo having worked on a bunch of projects like Guns & Gulaabs, Badhaai Do and Shaitan. “We just said ‘hi’ and ‘hello’ to each other and we never discussed anything whenever I’ve worked with him, which I’ve done three times by now. But when you’re doing a scene, you’ve to go with it and do what’s required of you. Janhvi and I’ve very different approaches to working and despite that, everything comes together because we’re professionals. We don’t talk about the scene too much,” he says.
Ulajh is all set for a theatrical release on August 2.
