London: The Football Association has charged Ashley Cole with misconduct after the England defender criticized the governing body in a vulgar Twitter post. The Chelsea left back reacted angrily on Friday after an FA commission queried the evidence he gave in defending teammate John Terry against a racism charge.
Cole attacked the FA's Independent Regulatory Commission after they found his team-mate John Terry guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand and questioned the credibility of the evidence the left-back gave as a witness.
An FA statement on Monday said the charge is "in relation to a Twitter comment which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute." Cole, who could be fined by the FA, is currently on national-team duty with England ahead of World Cup qualifiers against San Marino on Friday and Poland next Tuesday.
He is also set to be disciplined by Chelsea for the tweet, which read "Hahahahaa, well done (hash)fa I lied did I," followed by a vulgar expression. "Cole has until 4pm on Thursday 11 October 2012 to respond to the charge," the FA statement said.
