New Delhi: Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has been quick to quash the alleged statements that surfaced from The Sun recently claiming the Spanish tactician had said that Liverpool's lack of financial clout could cost them the Premier League crown.
The tabloid implied that Benitez had said that the only way the Reds could go on to claim their first league title in almost two decades would be if the remaining members of the traditional top four "messed up their season."
Rafa the gaffer though was quick to quash the nonsense, and told journalists at the club's pre-match press conference:
"We are really pleased because we are top and I can guarantee that if we are still top of the table after Christmas we will have a clear chance of winning the title. We are at the top of the table because we are doing things better than the others. It is up to us and that is it," said Rafa.
"The players have confidence," Benitez added. "Some people say we didn't play well at Blackburn but we had plenty of possession. We had control and opportunities. Against PSV it was the same. The second half was really good with different players, so the squad has confidence and the team has confidence," he said.
He continued: "Hull on Saturday will be difficult but if we win we'll have more confidence - and it's the same with all the games.
"We scored three against Blackburn, three against PSV - hopefully if we score goals tomorrow everyone will be happy and saying we can win the league."
