Lionel Messi led his side Inter Miami to an opening-game victory over Real Salt Lake in the MLS on Thursday as the David Beckham-owned side trotted to a 2-0 win.
The Argentine genius did not get on the scoresheet, however, played a crucial role as always in his side’s victory as he created the second strike to seal the game.
As has become the norm in games that feature the World Cup winner these days, famous personalities from various walks of life have flocked in to watch the 36-year-old in action.
On Thursday, Hollywood superstar Will Smith was in attendance to witness the magician from Rosario in action. Messi even embraced the ‘Pursuit of Happyness’ star as he was walking towards the tunnel during the half-time break.

Smith was also seen exchanging a few words with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s missus, Antonella Roccuzzo, at the game.

Inter Miami opened their MLS campaign with the win over RSL as Robert Taylor opened the scoring in the first half with a 39th-minute strike that put the Miami-based side ahead. The Beckam-owned side went into the break with one goal to the good and came back out in the second half to seal the win with an 83rd minute from Diego Gomes, which put the game beyond the fighting Real Salt Lake side.
Messi gave the crowd incredible moments to enjoy as he swiveled down the channels as has become his trademark leaving a trail of defenders flatfooted in his wake.
In a brilliant run, Messi managed to deftly loft the ball over a defender who had gone to ground in a mesmerising fashion which left spectators stunned.
Luis Suarez nearly got his debut MLS goal but was denied by a spectacular effort by the RSL goalie, who stuck his leg out to keep the Uruguayan’s shot from crossing the line.
Inter Miami travel to Los Angeles to take on Beckham’s former club LA Galaxy on the 26th of February next.
