Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic has sprung in a surprise and personally launched a bid to acquire Anzhi playmaker Willian Borges da Silva.
The Brazilian, who has passed his medical at Tottenham has now been among discussions with the Blues after a lucrative offer of 32 million pounds.
With Bale's future still hanging in the balance, Tottenham were in the chase for the Willian and Argentina winger Erik Lamela.
The White Hart Lane club were all but set to sign the 25-year-old offering a deal worth £30million but Chelsea's last minute interest can disturb things for the Spurs.
Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas said: "I confirmed our interest in the player. Everything is possible, but I'm not aware of the circumstances because of our involvement in the game.
"We have been active in the market and achieved great players as we were able to act quickly. We want to continue that way so it is very difficult for me to speak about players that belong to other clubs."
