New Delhi: Following the weekend wake-up call at Everton, Manchester United cannot afford another lethargic performance against West Ham on Tuesday at Old Trafford, especially with Chelsea now sitting comfortably on top with four points ahead of them.
Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are fit and available again to resume their central defensive partnership as Manchester United aims to bounce back and stay in the title hunt. A loss against West Ham United will mean that the Red Devils will have an uphill task to keep the title this season.
Sir Alex Ferguson's men go into the remaining 11 games knowing they need Chelsea to stumble along the way, with the two sides meeting for a crunch clash at Old Trafford in April.
Although United are four points behind the League leaders, Sir Alex still thinks his team will revive its push for another title.
"The league has been wide open this season, it’s been funny like that," he said. "Teams have dropped points you don’t expect them to drop, but the very nature of the league suggests we still have a good chance.
West Ham comes off a 3-0 victory over Hull, only the first time this season the team has won two games in a row. The result lifted the team to 13th in the standings and four points above the relegation zone.
So with West Ham coming in to the match with chins up, United know they will have their task cut out and it won't be an easy match as it looks on paper. Any result except victory will mean United’s chance of retaining the title for the fourth time in row will become very slim with Chelsea in superb run of form.
Elsewhere, Arsenal's win at the Britannia Stadium and defeat for Manchester United in their game against West Ham would see Arsenal go to second place.
So Fergie's men need to pull up their socks and go on the field with only one thing in mind that nothing less than a win in the remaining 11 games could make them lift the title for the fourth time in a row.
