Stoke: A first Premier League double by Gareth Bale helped Tottenham win 2-1 at Stoke but the hosts were furious that a late goal by debutant Jon Walters was not allowed.

Walters, who joined Stoke from Ipswich last week, appeared to head the ball over the line in injury time at the end of the match, but referee Chris Foy ignored the hosts' appeals for a goal.

Tottenham took the lead in slightly fortuitous fashion in the 19th minute. Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen could only parry Bale's fierce shot into the path of Peter Crouch, whose effort was cleared by Ryan Shawcross only to hit Bale in the face and rebound into the net.

Ricardo Fuller stroked home an equalizer for Stoke in the 25th from Matthew Etherington's corner but Tottenham was back in front before halftime, thanks to Bale's spectacular volley.

Aaron Lennon delivered a lofted pass from the right which the Wales international met with a stunning strike over Sorensen and into the far top corner.

The match ended in controversy though when Walters appeared to nod in from close range after Heurelho Gomes saved Robert Huth's header - only to be denied by the referee.
