Chennaiyin FC begin their home campaign with an assignment over newly-promoted Mohammedan SC as the Kolkata-based side come visiting the Marina Arena in Chennai on Thursday in an exciting ISL 2024-25 encounter.
Chennaiyin, who strengthened their outfit with a swathe of signings during the transfer window including the likes of Daniel Chima Chukwu, Jordan Wilmar Gill, and Kiyan Nasiri started off the campaign on a positive note as Owen Coyle’s men rallied from a goal down to breach the Kalinga fortress against Odisha FC on the road in their season opener.
Farukh Choudhary netted twice to overturn an early deficit after Coyle’s unit trailed early in the game following a Diego Mauricio spot kick. Chima added the side’s third in the second half to extend the visitors’ lead before Roy Krishna added a consolation in the fifth minute of added time for the Kalinga Warriors as Chennaiyin returned from Bhubneshwar with three points in the bag.
New boys Mohammedan slumped to an opening-round defeat to NorthEast United FC at home, before opening their account tally with a stalemate against FC Goa.
Alexis Gomez made Mohammedan history for the Bengalis side as he found the back of the net from the spot against Goa and Mohammedan nearly scaled their first-ever win in the Indian Super League, save for Armando Sadiku’s leveller deep in the second half added time to earn a share of the spoils for his side.
The side helmed by head coach Andrey Chernyshov will travel down south to take on the Chennaiyin FC side in their first ISL assignment on the road and will look to take points before departing the Tamil Nadu capital city.
Ahead of the campaign’s first fixture at the Marina Arena, CFC stand fifth on the table with a win in their solitary game thus far in the season, while Mohammedan come into the game placed 10th with just a point from their two previous outings.
