New Delhi: The Arsenal boss was surprised by the sackings this week of the Chelsea and Portsmouth managers.

Arsene Wenger has called for football club chairmen to be more patient in the wake of this week's sackings of Luiz Felipe Scolari and Tony Adams as managers of Chelsea and Portsmouth, respectively.

Neither manager had been given very long in the job: Scolari was appointed at Stamford Bridge in the summer and had got off to a flying start at Stamford Bridge, but but his side had lacked conviction in recent matches, when results had been indifferent.

As for Adams, he was given no more than 16 matches to prove himself in his first Premier League appointment, but victories eluded him.

Wenger, of course, was Adams's mentor in the former England captain's playing days at Highbury. And on Friday the Frenchman spoke about the demise, at least temporarily, of both his protege and respected colleague Scolari in English club management.

“Scolari is a well-known manager and was only given six months,” the Arsenal manager told journalists on Friday.

“It is difficult to know what is the atmosphere inside the club when you don’t live there every day, but it is still a massive surprise.

“However, you know when one super manager is sacked at Chelsea, another super manager will come in. I rate (Guus) Hiddink highly. He has been tremendously successful everywhere. He has had a long career and he’s a strong personality.”

Of Adams, Wenger said: “I believe that Tony will be a very good manager and I don’t believe he was given the needed time. It is a big surprise that they made a big decision so quickly because when they made the decision to give him the job, they knew he had worked there for a year and a half and they knew him. When you give a young manager that much responsibility, you have to give him time.”
