London: Wigan's hopes of staying in the Premier League are looking precarious after losing 2-0 at West Ham on Saturday with Kevin Nolan scoring his 100th career goal. Matt Jarvis scored in the 20th minute at Upton Park with a cross that eluded Nolan and goalkeeper Joel Robles before the ball nestled inside the far corner of the net.

Nolan wasn't to be denied in the 80th minute, latching onto Andy Carroll's flick-on before athletically smashing the ball beyond Robles. West Ham rose one place to 10th in the standings, the highest placing by a team which won promotion last season. By contrast, Wigan is in the last relegation spot and three points from safety with five rounds left to play following its second loss this week.

Norwich distanced themselves from the relegation zone and pushed Reading closer to the drop with a 2-1 win on Saturday over the last-place club, only its second win in 17 Premier League matches. Ryan Bennett and Elliott Bennett scored within three minutes of each other after the break as Norwich climbed to 13th, seven points clear of 18th-place Wigan.

Garath McCleary pulled a goal back in the 72nd but Reading remains 10 points from safety with 12 to play for and looks certain to return to the League Championship after one season in the top flight. Reading's away record has been miserable, with five points on the road this season, and they knew they must end the Canaries' six-match unbeaten run at Carrow Road, which included a victory over Everton.
