Netflix’s Korean hit Korean drama My Name became the talk of the town as soon as it was released in October 2021. After this crime thriller directed by Kim Jin-min started streaming, its leads, namely Han So-hee, Park Hee-soon, and Ahn Bo-Hyun also gained unprecedented fame and success. One of the male leads of the show – Ahn Bo Hyun – who played the role of Jeon-Pil Do, during a recent interaction, provided candid insights into the popular sex scene featured in the drama. In the scene, he starred alongside Han So Hee who played Yoon-Ji Woo.
Amid the initial success of the show, marked by positive reviews for acting and visuals, the unexpected and intense intimate moment between the two characters in the final episode became a major talking point, reports Koreaboo.
Contrary to Han So Hee, who reportedly disclosed in an earlier interview that she was not informed about the scene until committing to the project, Ahn Bo Hyun, in a subsequent interview, openly shared his perspective on the scene. Acknowledging the diverse opinions among viewers, Ahn Bo Hyun perceived the scene as a portrayal of genuine emotions between two individuals grappling with inner turmoil.
“As I saw people being divided in opinion regarding that scene, I saw that it could be interpreted in different ways. For me, as both Jiwoo and Pildo have scars, I hoped that they would become a source of comfort to each other," said Hyun.
He further added, “it was the process of how Jiwoo changed from a monster, due to Pildo. Regarding that part, I thought that it would bring about the emotions of a love scene."
In addressing the divisive reactions to the scene, Ahn Bo Hyun recognised the potential for varied interpretations. He expressed a desire for the characters, Jiwoo and Pildo, both carrying emotional wounds, to find solace in each other. For him, the sex scene served as a transformative moment for Jiwoo, evolving from a character marked by monstrosity due to Pildo’s influence. Ahn Bo Hyun saw it as a depiction of emotions akin to a love scene.
Regarding concerns about the challenges posed by such a revealing scene, Ahn Bo Hyun emphasised that extensive discussions with director Kim Jin Min, writer Kim Ba Da, and his co-star Han So Hee alleviated any apprehensions. This collaborative approach allowed him to immerse himself in the emotions of his character, Pildo, without feeling undue pressure.
“Director Kim Jin Min, Writer Kim Ba Da, Han So Hee and I discussed it lots before we filmed it and so I think that I didn’t feel much pressure but was able to be immersed in Pildo’s emotions," he explained.
The outcome of this collaborative effort resulted in a well-received and emotionally resonant scene that left a lasting impact on viewers.
