3 Simple Ways to Open & Convert HEIC Photos on a Windows PC

• Double-clicking the HEIC file usually opens the image in the Photos app. If not, you'll be prompted to install the HEIF extension.
• If you have trouble with the free HEIF extension, you can either download the paid HEVC extension or use a free tool called iMazing Converter.

Opening in Photos

Double-click the HEIC file you want to open. If you saved the file to your desktop, just double-click its icon. If the file is saved to your Downloads folder, you can open File Explorer, click Downloads in the left panel, and then double-click the HEIC file to open it. In most cases, double-clicking the photo will open it instantly in the Photos app without the need to install an extension. If you don't have the HEIC extension, you'll be prompted to download it. If this doesn’t open the file in Photos, just right-click the file, select Open with, and choose Photos. If the HEIC file you want to open is on your iPhone or iPad, you'll need to transfer it to your PC first.

Click Download and install now if prompted. If the HEIF extension needs to be installed, you'll see a pop-up asking you to download it. The "HEIF Image Extensions" page, which includes support for HEIC files, will open in the Microsoft Store. Once you click Download and install now, you may also need to click Yes to launch the Microsoft Store. If you're viewing an HEVC file (a video) instead of an HEIC file (an image), you'll be prompted to install a different extension—HEVC Video Extensions. This extension is not free—it costs $.99. Click Get to install the extension. This free plugin will make it easy to open HEIC files in Photos. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. If you're taken to a page that asks you to pay, it's the wrong extension. Search the store for "HEIF Image Extensions" (plural), with the developer listed as "Microsoft." Open iMazing Converter. Once installed, you'll find it in your Start menu.

Drag the HEIC or HEVC file(s) to the window. This tool is especially handy if you want to convert multiple HEIC files to a more universal format like JPEG or PNG. You can also convert HEVC files to MP4 with this tool.

Select a format. You can choose JPEG or PNG for photos, and either MP4 or MOV for videos. You'll also be able to adjust the quality—increasing the quality will increase the file size, while decreasing it will result in a smaller file.

Click Convert. A file browser will appear.

Select a location for your converted files and click OK. Once the files are converted, the new versions will appear at the selected location. You can now simply double-click the files to view them.
