What are low-set eyebrows?
Low-set brows sit closer to your eyes. Having low-set eyebrows simply means that your eyebrows naturally rest close to your eyes, which typically means that you have less visible eyelid space between your eyes and your brows. People with low-set brows often have hooded eyes, too. On the other hand, high-set eyebrows sit farther away from the eye. This leaves people with a lot of space between their eyes and brows. Are low-set eyebrows attractive?
Yes, low-set eyebrows are considered an attractive feature. Lots of people agree that low-set eyebrows give someone a striking and dramatic look that’s quite attractive (think: the “hunter eyes” seen in lots of models). Because less of their eyelid is visible, this tends to make them look mysterious, alluring, and serious in an ultra-cool way. What about high-set eyebrows? High-set eyebrows are also considered attractive, just in a different way! They tend to give someone a softer, more youthful look that makes them seem open and approachable. Are low-set or high-set eyebrows more attractive? Neither eyebrow type is more attractive than the other. Low-set and high-set eyebrows simply give people different types of looks. Having low-set (or high-set) eyebrows definitely isn’t something you need to fix! The placement of your brows is unique to you and adds to your all-around beauty. However, we understand if you don’t like your low-set brows and want to change them. We’ll go over some ways to get higher-looking brows in the section below. If you have high-set brows and want your brows to look lower, we’ll also go over some ways to achieve this look in the section below.
Ways to Get Higher Looking Eyebrows
Wear light and shimmery eyeshadows on your lids. A simple trick to help your eyebrows look higher is to create the illusion of having more eyelid space. To do this, makeup artist Alicia D'Angelo suggests “keeping the inner half of the eye, from the tear duct to the mid iris, a lighter shade of shadow or even skin tone.” She says this helps “keep the eyes looking more open and farther apart.” Makeup artist Daniel Vann explains that lighter makeup brings your features forward while darker makeup pushes your features back. So, keeping your eyelids light and shimmery can help them look more prominent. If you want to deepen your eye look, D'Angelo recommends that you “concentrate darkness on the outer half of the lash line…using liner or shadow on an angled brush.” Aim to keep the darker color on the thinner side so you don’t narrow your eyelid space. Some other quick ways to make your eyes appear bigger include curling your lashes and applying a few coats of mascara, says D'Angelo.
Brush your eyebrows upward. Fluffy, brushed-up eyebrows are currently on trend. And, as a plus, brushing them upwards can help create the illusion of having more eyelid space. Master beauty consultant and celebrity makeup artist JoAnn Solomon simply suggests using a clear brow gel to brush your brows upward so they stay in place. Once the gel dries, feel free to use a thin eyebrow pencil to fill in your brows as needed.
Remove hair from the bottom of your eyebrows. If you have thicker eyebrows or you like the look of having thinner eyebrows, removing hair along the bottom is a super easy way to create more eyelid space and make your brows appear higher. Using tweezers, pluck out the hairs at the bottom of your brows, following your natural brow line. Just go slowly and check how your brows are looking to avoid plucking too much hair. Professional hair stylist and makeup artist Janet Miranda recommends using a brow kit to help you pluck and shape your brows. If you don’t feel comfortable plucking your brows yourself, makeup and beauty specialist Miranda Mendelson recommends going to a professional brow technician to get the shape you want. Then, all you have to do is maintain the look with your own set of tweezers. As a more extreme (but totally cool) option, consider shaving your eyebrows completely! Then, draw your new brows higher up using an eyebrow pencil or gel—either go free-hand or use eyebrow stencils.
Match the color of your eyebrows to your skin tone. When your eyebrows blend in more with your skin, they stand out less, which can help them appear not as low. If you have a lighter skin tone and darker brows, consider bleaching your eyebrows to a lighter color. If you have a darker skin tone and lighter brows, licensed esthetician Melissa Jannes suggests using a brow tint to darken your brows. She says they typically last for 4 weeks. If you don’t want to bleach your brows, beauty and skincare specialist Barbie Ritzman says you can lighten your brows with hydrogen peroxide or lemon juice.
Get a Botox brow lift. Botox is a neurotoxin injection that relaxes your muscles and prevents them from moving. When Botox is injected into the depressor muscles around your eyes, it can temporarily lift up your brows. During the procedure, a physician or nurse practitioner injects the Botox between your eyebrows and at the corners. Botox is a temporary procedure that typically lasts for 3 to 4 months. Board-certified plastic surgeon Asif Pirani, MD says the temporary nature of Botox can be a plus, because if you’re not liking your look, it’ll simply wear off after a few months. Board-certified dermatologist Aanand Geria, MD says the risks and side effects of Botox are pretty minimal, with the most common risk being bruising. In some cases, Dr. Geria says the injections can cause Spock brows, which are unusually raised brows, or cause the brows to droop. To prepare for getting Botox injections, Dr. Geria says to avoid any substances that can make you more likely to bleed 48 hours before your appointment, like taking NSAID painkillers (aspirin, ibuprofen) or drinking alcohol.
Get a surgical brow lift. For a permanent way to lift your eyebrows, consider getting a surgical brow lift. Before the procedure, your plastic surgeon will give you topical anesthesia to numb the area. Then, they’ll make an incision along your hairline, tighten your skin, and remove any excess. Finally, they’ll stitch up the incision. It typically takes 2 weeks to recover from a brow lift, and it may take up to 6 months to see your final results. The most common risks and side effects of a brow lift include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and infection. Additionally, the incision typically leaves a scar.
Ways to Get Lower Looking Eyebrows
Fill in the bottom of your eyebrows. To make your eyebrows appear lower, simply fill them in along the bottom to reduce the space between your eyes and brows. Use a brow pencil or pomade and an angled brush to outline how low you want to go. Then, D'Angelo says to make short, quick strokes to mimic your hair and fill in the area. Tip: Draw your brows straighter, too. Having less of an arch can help your brows appear a bit lower.
Get Botox injections. While Botox injections are primarily used to lift the brows, they can actually help lower them, too. When it’s injected into the muscles that lift the brows, it prevents them from moving, which keeps your eyebrows in a lower position. During the procedure, a physician or nurse practitioner injects the Botox in a few spots on your forehead, typically towards the center. Botox is temporary and typically lasts for 3 to 4 months.
Final Thoughts
Low-set eyebrows are a normal type of brows that lots of people have. Low-set eyebrows mean that your eyebrows sit closer to your eyes, which reduces the space between your eyes and brows. It’s a common eyebrow placement that lots of people have, and it’s considered an attractive feature, too! So, don’t feel like you need to change the height or shape of your brows.
