What is the Leviathan spirit?
The Leviathan is a manipulative, serpent-like spirit from the Bible. It’s often described as having thick, hard scales and living in seas or rivers. The Leviathan is known for lying and manipulating the truth in order to break covenants with others and with God. There are several references to the Leviathan spirit in the Bible: In Isaiah 27:1, “In that day, the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and Leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.” In Job 3:8, “Let them curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.” In Job 41:1, "Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook, or press down his tongue with a cord?” In Psalms 74:14, “You broke the heads of Leviathan in pieces. You gave him as food to people and desert creatures.” In Psalms 104:26, “There the ships go, and Leviathan, whom you formed to play there.”
Leviathan Spirit Characteristics
The Leviathan twists the truth. The Leviathan specializes in spinning the truth in its victims' minds. Someone can tell the victim one thing, and they’ll hear something completely different. If you’re dealing with the Leviathan spirit, look for manipulation and half-truths.
It breaks relationships. One of the Leviathan spirit’s primary goals is to destroy covenants of all kinds, but especially the marriage covenant. The Leviathan is believed to be the cause of almost all divorces. When dealing with the Leviathan, look for signs of pridefulness and always placing blame on others.
It destroys the victim’s relationship with God. Not only does Leviathan break relationships between people, but it causes the victim to doubt their relationship with God. It often twists Scripture and whispers lies about God, creating anger and resentment toward Him. The victim will feel lost and confused and doubt God’s involvement in their life.
It causes stubbornness. The Leviathan is often described as stiff-necked, meaning it cannot easily be moved. If you think someone is being attacked by the Leviathan, look for signs of severe stubbornness. The victim will believe they are always right and will refuse to do anything that wasn’t their idea.
The Leviathan makes you cold-hearted. A victim of the Leviathan will often seem robotic and overly nonchalant. They’ll seem unfeeling and unsympathetic, unable to relate to or care about others. Their true self is trapped beneath the Leviathan’s scales.
The Leviathan is proud and arrogant. The spirit of pride offers the Leviathan’s victims a false sense of identity. It convinces them they’re special and causes them to commit idolatry by self-worship. Look for someone who mocks and invalidates others and their relationship with God.
It destroys leaders. The Leviathan often targets the pridefulness in leaders and influencers. It will help lift them up just to watch them fall from greater heights. It wants as many witnesses as possible to watch the leader’s destruction.
It causes depression. Whenever a victim is dealing with a demonic presence, they will suffer from depression at some point or another. This is caused by the spirit of heaviness, as the human soul was not meant to live in darkness.
How to Defeat the Leviathan Spirit
Live in humility. To fight the Leviathan, you must stay humble. Listen to your leaders and take accountability for your actions. Continue to pray and turn to God for assistance.
Ask God for forgiveness. Whether you have accidentally been used by or purposely worked with the Leviathan, you need to repent. When you know you’re ready to walk away from Leviathan and truly mean it, pray to God so that He may forgive you.
Become born again. After you’ve asked for forgiveness, you must accept Jesus into your heart. Rededicate yourself to Him so that you can wield power in His name.
Cast out the spirit. Call on the power of Jesus to remove the evil spirit from your life. Break all covenants you made with the Leviathan, no matter how small and subtle. When a child of God wields His power, the spirit has no choice but to obey.
Stay alert. Spirits like the Leviathan will often keep pushing boundaries to try to get back in. Remain strong in your faith and continue to live by the Word of God so you don’t fall victim again.
