The rising public awareness around pets and the responsibilities associated with owning a pet have led people to develop a sensitive approach to animals. Many states have witnessed a surge in the number of pets being adopted by people. Humans provide shelter, food and required medical treatment to their pets which they reciprocate with their love for their owners. Among all the cities that have witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of pet shops in recent years, Visakhapatnam has the maximum number of stores. Along with pets, birds are also being bought by people in the city.
The manager of a pet store in Visakhapatnam shared that the sales of pets and birds have increased in the last few months. He also noted that these pet shops have various types of pets and birds for sale. The pricing of the birds varies, starting from a modest Rs 500 to Rs 3,000, depending on their origin. On the other hand, the price of a rabbit and a guinea pig has been fixed at Rs 600 and Rs 1,500.
As far as the pricing of the dogs is concerned, the shop owners have fixed the prices as per the breeds. While one can buy a Pomeranian for Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000, a few others have been priced at Rs 15,000. Additionally, the price of a Labrador is Rs 80,000. For a German Shepherd, the cost is Rs 18,000.
In recent years, Visakhapatnam has witnessed a surge in the demand for dogs and Persian cats. More than 100 new pet shops have been opened to cater to the needs of bird and animal lovers residing in the city. People believe that with pets in their house, especially dogs, potential dangers like theft can be prevented. In addition to that, dogs are also considered members of the families.
