CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced that a four-lane bridge would be constructed across the Coleroon river, which connects Tiruchy city and Srirangam, to replace the existing bridge that is in a dilapidated state. A minor bridge would be built across the Ayyan canal on the approach road and works on a road junction would be undertaken. These improvements would come at a cost of Rs 81 crore.The CM made that announcement during Zero Hour at the State Assembly. Stating that the government would take up the building of new bridges, laying of circular roads and by-pass roads to reduce travelling time and operating cost of vehicles, Jayalalithaa said a footover-bridge would be constructed in the place of the causeway connecting Karur-Vangal Road and Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road near Pasupathipalayam in Karur district, at a cost of Rs 12.50 crore. A comprehensive project report on laying circular and radial roads for the municipal corporations — Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Salem, Tirupur, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Erode and Vellore — would begin very soon, the CM said.A similar project report will be prepared for the laying of by-pass roads along the State highways in municipal areas to ease traffic congestion.
