Digha: About 60 fishing trawlers with 800 fishermen, which ventured into deep sea for fishing three days back, were reportedly missing following cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal around Digha coast.

Digha fishermen and fish trader’s association secretary Barun Kumar Maity said that forty other trawlers have been carried away towards Kasafuly and Balaramguri coastal areas in Orissa.

He said a fishing trawler Maa Moni Sakhi, owned by one Batakrishna Das and carrying about 18 fishermen, was broken into pieces, one kilometer away from the Digha coast on Monday, while 14 others were rescued. Four persons had been swept away, Maity said.

He said the incident occurred following heavy rain coupled with strong winds blowing at 90 km per hour. The coast guard unit at Haldia has been informed about the incident, he added.

Superintendent of Police, East Midnapore district, Ashok Dutta said on telephone that they are yet to contact the fishermen and fish traders association in Digha.
