CHENNAI: SRM University has launched a rehabilitation and empowerment centre for the differently abled. The centre is at the Kattankulathur campus and will cater to beneficiaries in Chennai and Kancheepuram.P R Shampath, Commissioner, differently-abled welfare department, inaugurated the facility. Suggesting that early intervention of disability was essential to implement remedial measures, Shampath said children in the 0 to one year age group should be targeted to cut short the time lapse and enhance the chances of leading a normal life. He suggested that the SRM University should collaborate with the early intervention centre at Tambaram.Dr M Ponnavaiko, Vice-Chancellor, SRM University, underlined the need to focus on the preventive aspects of disabilities. Dr P Thangaraju, Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical), SRM University, Dr D Balakrishnan, Dean-Medical Research, and Dr (Mrs) Neeradha Chandramohan, Director, NIEPMD, spoke.An MoU was also signed between the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, SRM University, and the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD).
